We've all got Janet Jackson to blame
Superbowl Sunday is tomorrow. I saw on the news that a couple of advertisers are pulling commercials from the game because of fear of the FCC. Last year, The FCC levied a fine as a result of Janet's "wardrobe malfunction" which resulted in a bare breast being exposed during halftime. I saw the game, and I even saw a recording later and I was not offended. Where do these do-gooders get off anyway? Consider, what about the ads for erectile dysfunction which seem to be everywhere these days? The do-gooders would have you believe that a child seeing a bare breast on national TV would be forever damaged by the sight. OK, so what about the questions children might ask about this. How does a parent deal with a bare breast on TV? I would hope sensible heads would prevail and the parent would inform the child this was simply a part of the female form. Why be embarrassed about it? I for one, would be more embarassed by a child asking me what ED was and why an erection lasting more than 4 hours might be a bad thing, needing medical attention maybe. This is a classic case of overreaction on the part of the FCC last year, and the advertisers this year. I like to see the commercials during the Superbowl. Some of the most entertaining commercials come out during this game. Some go on to win some very big awards for creativity. All I know, I have seen some which stick in my mind, like the Budweiser commercials with the Clydesdale horses playing footbal. One from a while back had them kicking a field goal and the two ranch hands discuss the kick, and the first guy asks, do they always do that? and the other replies, no, they usually go for two. And then there was the first commercial from Apple for the Macintosh which played exactly one time and has only been seen since in programs featuring popular and award winning commercials. Some commercials are really good, mini movies with a story line and characterdevelopment and a defined plot. Some are simply trash. Whatever the commercial, for the advertiser to pull it because it might offend some as a result of the Janet fiasco, is wrong to my way of thinking. What happened to the 1st amendment? I feel sorry for these people who felt they had to be politically correct as a result of the Janet fiasco. This is my blog and here, I can say what I want, whenever I want in whatever manner I see fit in honor of the 1st amendment. Blogger sees this and does not censor my entries. No one censors my entries. This is the fundamental right under the 1st amendment.
In honor of George Carlin and just to piss people off, I quote this excerpt from the FCC rules and regulations which I recently found in a search of the net:
b) As used in this section, the term `profane', used with respect to language, includes the words 'shit', `piss', 'fuck', 'cunt', 'asshole', and the phrases 'cock sucker', 'mother fucker', and 'ass hole', compound use (including hyphenated compounds) of such words and phrases with each other or with other words or phrases, and other grammatical forms of such words and phrases (including verb, adjective, gerund, participle, and infinitive forms). If this pisses you off, then so be it. I stand by the 1st amendment. You do not have to be here. You can leave at any time. I did not coerce you in any way to get here. You came here by your own free will by clicking on a link somewhere. This is my postcard from the edge and I make no apology for speaking my piece. Under the 1st amendment, it is MY RIGHT to speak my piece, and likewise it is YOUR RIGHT to ignore me and leave.
