Anne of Green Gables
My local PBS station broadcast the entire set of 3 stories. It started at 8 in the morning on New Year's Day, interrupted by pledge breaks, and continued through until 9 in the evening. I watched it all, start to finish. Well, not actually in real time since I watched as usual from tape so I could skip over the pledge breaks. Megan Follows plays Anne. Colleen Dewhurst plays Marilla Cuthbert. Richard Farnsworth played Marilla's brother, Matthew Cuthbert. Megan Follows was only 18 when she made the first series in 1985. I learned this set of 3 series received more awards than any other Canadian movies. The 3 series played in Japan as full length movies in theaters for over 5 years running. The story of Anne is touching. There is no violence at all, unless you count when Anne breaks her slate over gilbert's head, until the 3rd movie which involves a story line during World War I. Megan Follows must be very petite indeed since she played Anne at age 12 so well at the very beginning of the first movie I thought she was really that young. Avonlea may be fiction, but Prince Edward Island is not. I poked around on the web and finally found out where the island is located off the coast of Nova Scotia in Canada. I wondered exactly where it was since I knew it was on the east coast of Canada, but at one point Anne watches a sunset looking over water, so I needed to find out how that could be. thus, Avonlea must have been on the west side of the island. There is a website devoted to Prince Edward Island. Of the three movies, I really liked the first two and was a bit disappointed in the last one. The 3rd movie was different from the 1st two, darker, sadder. Maybe the last movie was different because it was Anne all grown up and I liked the younger Anne much better. Maybe I'm just sentimental. Anyway, if you have the chance to see these movies, I highly recommend you do.
