It has been 30 years since I first saw one of these, and finally, I found out by watching an episode of CSI, what it was.
In this episode of CSI, a 90 minute rerun I watched from an old tape, I heard them talk about a "cocaine fingernail" and they showed what one looks like. I saw one of these before, only one time. I was on a submarine when I was in the Navy, USS Halibut, SSN 587. I noticed one of the guys on board had a really long nail on his little finger. I mean almost half an inch beyond his fingertip. I asked him about this, why he had this one nail so long, and he told me it was like a fraternity thing with a group he was involved with ashore, like a secret handshake kind of thing. I did not buy this, but it did not seem important at the time. I knew nothing about drugs then, absolutely nothing. I was ignorant. Even later, when I had a stepdaughter involved in the drug scene and during her rehab (3 times over before she ran off on her own, never to be seen by me again. I hope she is doing OK.) I learned more than I ever wanted to know about dope and dopers, I never saw anything like this, so again, I was ignorant. Now, it makes complete sense, a coke spoon. There was a time when McDonalds coffee stirrers were in demand, disappearing in record numbers from the condiments area, because they were the perfect coke spoon. So, now I know why this guy had this fingernail as long as it was. I can't remember who this guy was, which means this guy is safe from me being a witness against him. (On a side note about CSI, Lady Heather and Gil Grissom should get involved in a relationship in the story line, on a continuing basis. The Lady Heather is so cool as a character and the character of Gil Grissom seems to understand the Lady Heather on a level above that of an investigator and a suspect. They almost started in this rerun, but it panned out in the story line. She reads him like a book, and all he can do is stare at her and wonder. So close, yet so far away...)
