Inside the White House - The Watergate Affair, 30 years later Public Broadcasting (PBS) has done it again, when they broadcast a retrospective of the Watergate Affair 30 years later. I was there, in a sense, as i was in the Navy and it was President Nixon who signed a Presidential Unit Citation for the USS Halibut, SSN-587, for doing some spectactualr things. Read the book, Blind Man's Bluff, for details. I was on board from 1970 through 1975, just so you know the time frame when I was there related to the events in the book. Smilin' Jack McNish was my Commanding Officer when I reported aboard. I don't think they called him Smilin' Jack in the book. So, anyway, I was watching all of this happen in the news and I watched the hearings with Senator Sam (Sam Irvin, democrat, North Carolina). I am in the process of reading once again, The Pentagon Papers. I ran across a copy at a used book store and somewhere along the line, I had misplaced the copy I had, so I bought it for the grand sum of 25 cents, one quarter of a dollar, which I thought a good deal. What ever happened to all of the Nixon tapes? I would like to hear some of the conversations which took place. I've heard bits and pieces from programs such as this one, but I wonder where they are today. What happened to the missing 18 minutes, anyway? I guess we'll never know. Anyway, I thought Nixon was basically a good man, and a good president, and I think he was just a victim of circumstance from the actions of others at first, but later, when he knew, is when he made his fatal error in judgement. I think that even though I highly respect Nixon as a President, it was right for him to resign. Sigh, a good man gone bad. August 8th, 1974 - President Nixon, "I shall resign the Presidency effective at noon tomorrow. Vice President Ford will be sworn in as President, at that hour, in this office." And another quote from President Nixon, "Always give your best. Never get discouraged. Never be petty. Always remember, others may hate you, but those who hate you don't win, unless you hate them, and then you destroy yourself."
