I finally watched "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein" with Kennneth Branagh and Robert De Niro I am not usually a big fan of remakes. This movie, is not exactly a remake, but rather closer to the original story as written by Mary Shelley, at least as much as I remember from the book I read many years ago. Most of us who have been around for a while remember the classic black and white film with Boris Karloff, and then there is the Mel Brooks production of "Young Frankenstein" which is another form of classic in a class of it's own. Kenneth Branagh (who made us suffer through a 4 hour version of Hamlet, by the way, and then redeemed himself with a wonderful production of Much Ado About Nothing.) played well and Robert De Niro did also. I recognized a number of other very famous actors, John Cleese and Robert Briers to name a couple. I taped this movie, as I do for most everything I watch on the tube so I can wind past commercials, and I admit, only half paid attention, but I have it in the stack to watch again and this time, I promise I will pay closer attention. However, even though I was half distracted by some other things I was doing to recover my computer from a hardware failure, I think this production was well done. I seem to remember movie reviews of the time when it came out in 1994 I think, which panned the production as overdone and way too long. Maybe so. I think some of the scenes were a bit drawn out with special effects, but the dialogue was not bad and the acting was all very good. I admit it did seem to drag a bit from time to time, but maybe it was just me since I was also working on my computer recovery. No matter, the tape is in the stack of ones to watch again.
