I watched a program on TV and this thought about the United States struck me
The USA is increasingly becoming the target of hatred or at the least being thought of as imperialist. More and more of the rest of the world seems to see us as being oppressive and less than honorable people. Why is this happening? I do not know, but I do know one thing, we, this country, the United States are still the destination of choice for people to go who are in need of or simply want a "better" life than what they have. A lot of people in the world want to come here and leave behind where they live now. Why else would so many people cross the border as illegal aliens from Mexico and Canada? Why do Cubans float across to florida day after day trying to get here? Why do Chinese, Vietnamese, Laotian, and whatever smuggle themselves into this country in cargo containers? These people are coming here for something! they have a reason why the USA is their destination of choice. I don't see the same amount of people crossing borders of other countries, at least not in the same quantity, or at least if they are doing so, it does not make the news. I listen to BBC news on shortwave radio as well as watch CNN and the other cable news services and I just don't hear about illegal aliens crossing borders of other countries like I do here in the USA. Does that mean it does not happen as much or that I am simply not hearing about it? You tell me...

And while I'm on the subject of immigrants, legal and otherwise, I found a quote from Theodore Roosevelt recently which is in parallel with my opinion on the subject of English speaking in the United States. I expect people coming here to learn the language we use for commerce and government. I expect people to be able to at least read the Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights and the Constitution. These documents represent the United States. These are the documents which define our collective soul as a country, and if you want to come here to live, I welcome you to this country, but I ask that you learn the language of these documents so you can read and understand them for yourself. Oh, and another thing, I would appreciate it if you support yourself and stay off public assistance to the best of your ability. Now, for the quote...
"We have room but for one Language here and that is the English Language, for we intend to see that the crucible turns our people out as Americans of American nationality and not as dwellers in a polyglot boarding-house." Theodore Roosevelt
