Paying a parking ticket with pennies as an act of protest. I heard this story on the local news just before Monday Night Football. Bellevue is a town north of Seattle. They have a 2 hour free grace parking period. After that, you have to pay to park. Recently, a lady was given a parking ticket for overstaying the free period and not paying and was fined $37.00. She paid the ticket fine by getting 3,700 pennies, putting them into a box and sending it in, all 22 pounds of it. When the package arrived at the Bellevue courthouse, they thought it was a bomb and evacuated the area. Eventually it all got sorted out, but now the court says they will not accept the pennies and want a "more suitable form of payment." Say, what? Last I heard a penny was a coin minted by the US government and money, paper and coins, are legal tender for all debts public and private. It even says so on each piece of our paper money that it is legal tender for all debts public and private. The Bellevue court says they "didn't have the time or resources to devote to counting pennies." The lady said she was sorry about them thinking it was a bomb, but that was their problem and not something she was responsible for. At the moment, she is standing by her pennies as payment for the fine. I, for one, hope she does not cave in to them wanting a "more suitable form of payment." I wonder, how much does it cost to mail 22 pounds of pennies? This act of protest, is something I think I would do, given the opportunity.
