Nightline on ABC did a program on why I started this weblog! The program was on last week. I recorded it and finally got around to watching it last night. The first entry in the blog has to do with the fast food industry and the fact that people ahve brought a lawsuit against several fast food makers about their products being fattening. The title of this blog indicates why it is they brought suit. These people say they got fat because they ate fast food from these makers and the fact they are overweight is not their fault but the fault of the fast food makers. The focus of the program is obesity in general and the reasons why the average American is gaining weight, and has been for many years. In my opinion, this is a lawsuit without merit. Read my initial blog entry and if you are interested, you can read more of my words at my main web site located at http://www.shorttime.com where I have a journal page which contains several more entries related to this same subject and others I find terminally stupid. To me, it is very simple, you eat more calories than you burn, and you gain weight. Every animal and plant does this. We human beings are no different than any other living things in the universe as we know it, in that we gain weight if we consume more calories than we burn. So, why is it the fault of a food industry that people are gaining weight? Is it a fault at all? I admit that there sometimes other factors which make a weight gain unavoidable. My father was a case in point. At one point, he had to take medication for a medical condition. This medication caused him to gain weight because it changed his metabolism. Once his course of treatment was concluded, he eventually lost most of the extra weight he had gained. All I am saying here, is that there is really no fault to place and the people who are trying to use the law to hold someone else to blame for what might be the results of their own personal choices is what I find absurd. I used to eat a lot of "fast food" and I gained weight. I realized it was my choice and changed my diet to get away from the burgers and fries and I now lean toward salads and vegetables. I still have the occasional steak with all the trimmings, but it isn't the habit it used to be. Now, my steak dinner is a once a month treat and sometimes I might go for 2 or 3 months between steak dinners. I do like seafood and I do have chicken once in a while but again, this is not the usual, just once in a while as a treat for myself. I much prefer rice and noodles and vegetable soup. If I knew how to make miso and had the materials, I would eat miso for breakfast, lunch and dinner. And then on another note, I like peanut butter (crunchy, of course, with some real butter added.) and jelly (grape and cherry are the best, followed closely by pineapple), and bagels with some cream cheese mixed with real butter. My choices resulted in my weighing about 260 pounds or so at my worst, of which I have lost 60 and now float around 200 give or take a pound of three. My goal is to get back down to 185 which my doctor says is about right for my build. My doctor says to try to get there, but not to be a fanatic about it, just try to eat a little less when I eat. All it takes is one teaspoon less at each meal and it starts to add up over time. The twits with the lawsuit want instant gratification and to absolve themselves of the blame for what they have done to themselves. Every trip starts with the first step. As long as you keep taking steps, no matter how small, you will eventually see the results and get to your destination. I hope these lawsuits are thrown out of court and the judge tells these people to work on their life choices. Twits! This topic of a lawsuit for being overweight is absurd.
